Healthy Island is a fun, replayable game for children ages 7–11 years old. It encourages them to think about health and wellbeing choices in four areas: exercise, healthy eating, dental health and mindfulness.
The current version of the app reflects the winning concepts from Schools App Challenge 2016 and 2017. West Wakefield Health and Wellbeing worked with Year 6 students in Wakefield Primary Schools to co-design a health app that offers a fun and engaging way for young people to learn about making good health choices, with a specific focus on oral health, diet and exercise and mindfulness.
Healthy Island is based on Horbury Bridge Academy's winning concept in 2016. The app has since been updated with the 2017 winning concept from Sandal Castle Primary School. The brief changes each year, with the 'Final Six' schools presenting to a judging panel which has previously including Directors, CEO's and industry leaders across NHS, Public Health and Microsoft.
All of the monsters, games, names, and settings in Healthy Island have been co-designed with Wakefield schools, including Horbury Bridge Academy, Sandal Castle Primary, Sandal Castle Primary, Towngate Primary, Ossett South Parade Primary, Horbury Primary and Hendal Primary Schools.
"It's so ace to see our work get turned into a real app that I can actually play and share with my friends and family. It makes me so proud."
